A Milder Solution

Hydresia™ ingredients have a unique transient emulsification mechanism that has been demonstrated to offer a milder, non-irritating alternative to non-ionic emulsifiers. This feature provides maximum moisture retention and skin barrier integrity in a wide variety of product categories, including cleansers, lotions, creams, baby care and sensitive skin products.

  • Non-ionic emulsifiers are skin irritants - Widely used traditional non-ionic emulsifiers have been shown to cause skin irritation and moisture loss upon application to the skin, due to their ability to emulsify skin lipids. Trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) studies by a number of research groups have confirmed this, demonstrating that TEWL values increase after skin application (See Barany et al, Int J of Pharmaceutics 195 (2000) 189-195).
  • Hydresia™ is non-irritating and mild when applied to the skin – Due to its unique structure, Hydresia™ has superior emulsification property in the intact state. However, on application to the skin or hair, these properties are lost as the oleosome structures are disrupted. A clinical study comparing the TEWL values* of formulations with oleosin protein (the component emulsifier of Hydresia™) to formulations containing non-ionic emulsifiers was conducted. The test showed oleosin protein formulated with preservative did not cause irritation or moisture loss when compared to the preservative control. The formulation containing non-ionic emulsifiers was significantly more irritating that the oleosin protein.

This is significant and demonstrates that Hydresia™ does not disrupt the skin barrier or cause irritation upon application.

Hydresia™ ingredients do not Impair Skin Barrier Integrity Hydresia™ ingredients do not Impair Skin Barrier Integrity Oleosin protein (the component emulsifier of Hydresia™) was shown to cause no significant increase in water loss or skin irritation, as measured by TEWL*. This is compared to formulations with non-ionic emulsifiers, which caused a 36% increase in TEWL after 28 hours. P < 0.05.

    * Trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) is frequently used as a measurement tool to predict skin irritation.

  • Hydresia™ has superior moisture retention and occlusive properties - Traditional occlusive agents are used in formulations to retain moisture. Petrolatum and mineral oil are widely used occlusive agents that are typically dispersed by non-ionic emulsifiers in formulations.

Data confirms the irritation caused by non-ionic emulsifiers retards the ability of petrolatum and mineral oil to reduce moisture loss. In contrast, Hydresia™ delivers immediate moisture retention and superior occlusive properties. Thus, Hydresia™ can replace both non-ionic emulsifiers and occlusive agents in a formulation while offering superior moisturization, and improved skin health.

A panel study comparing moisture retention properties of a formulation with Hydresia™ alone or petrolatum / mineral oil + non-ionic emulsifiers was conducted. The test revealed that Hydresia achieved maximal moisture retention on the skin two days after application, whereas the traditional formulations needed 9 days to achieve equivalent results.

Hydresia™ ingredients provide immediate moisturization Hydresia™ ingredients provide immediate moisturization Hydresia™ preserves the skin barrier while retaining maximum moisture immediately upon application to the skin, whereas traditional occlusive agents emulsified with non-ionic emulsifiers build up moisture over time.
